Some beautiful art, some really ripe dialogue。 It's just a lot of fun to see someone throw everything they have into the pot。 Some beautiful art, some really ripe dialogue。 It's just a lot of fun to see someone throw everything they have into the pot。 。。。more

Spectacularly creative artwork; the writing was a little lacking in comparison

This scifi bomb was full of crazy and colours and creatures and what-an-earth-is-happening。 It started crazy and just kept on going more crazy till the end。 On one hand I absolutely loved this weird thing, but on the other hand my mind is packed with unanswered questions on the world, characters and plot。 My utter confusion prevents me from giving this epic tale more than three stars。

I was very excited to read this whole story after I had read the first volume, The Black Incal last year。 Unfortunately, I had trouble getting into this。 Some of it was kind of a slog to get through。 Maybe I would have liked it more if I read each volume separately? The plot feels like the characters are jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire, and then into another pan and a bigger fire。 It's one calamity after another。 I feel like I didn't get to know the characters that well either。 M I was very excited to read this whole story after I had read the first volume, The Black Incal last year。 Unfortunately, I had trouble getting into this。 Some of it was kind of a slog to get through。 Maybe I would have liked it more if I read each volume separately?

I’m not an Astronaut and I’ve never done acid, but after reading this book I’m pretty sure I don’t need to。I’m not even going to pretend I understood everything that was going on but this is up there with Watchmen as one of the best。

Jannik

Great art, but strange and sometimes confusing plot。

The art is great - 5 stars visually。 The story is all over the place and is a mish-mash of science fiction and esoteric concepts all thrown together with little context or backstory。 It bothered me at first but grew on me as I took more of a perspective of just being “along for the ride” and not trying to think about whether the story “makes sense” in a conventional way。

The only fitting rating for this book is 11/10 for consistently dialing it up all the way to 11 and maintaining the tempo and tone on every single page。 True masterpiece。

So, this might sit wrong with a lot of people, but I am going to say it: the works of Moebius are overrated。 Or, to be more precise, Alejandro Jodorowsky is overrated。 *Disclaimer*I have read a lot of comics in my life, from classic Disney, Asterix and Tin Tin to Alan Moore, Frank Miller and all the revivalists of the genre to modern classics and a lot of experimental stuff in between。 A good portion if not the majority of the books I read during a year are comics (or graphic novels, if you pref So, this might sit wrong with a lot of people, but I am going to say it: the works of Moebius are overrated。 Or, to be more precise, Alejandro Jodorowsky is overrated。 *Disclaimer*I have read a lot of comics in my life, from classic Disney, Asterix and Tin Tin to Alan Moore, Frank Miller and all the revivalists of the genre to modern classics and a lot of experimental stuff in between。 A good portion if not the majority of the books I read during a year are comics (or graphic novels, if you prefer)。 So I finally decided to look into Moebius, the highly regarded illustrator。 I have not done so before because his works are not easily available and are always very expensive。 I went to the most recommend work in his portfolio and。。。 the experience did not match my expectations。*end of disclaimer*I find Moebius to be an "ok" illustrator。 I like his style, but I also like Herge and Uderzo, two of his inspirations。 It's just that I don't find him the genius some claim he is。 I don't like that his characters are not consistent in style and features, changing from scene to scene, and there is also a problem with conveying emotions through facial expressions。 There are some inconsistencies from panel to panel (let's say in the first DiFool stands behind a character with square shoulder pads, and in the next panel, the other character has round pads and maybe an extra head bandana)。 Small details, but I don't like this lack of attention to details, especially in a style oriented towards fine details。Alejandro Jodorowsky is over rated and a terrible storyteller。 There are some great ideas in there, but they are just stated, blurted on the page, not developed。 All the ideas seem disjointed, they are not articulated in a story that flows naturally。 Concepts, ideas, actions and sequences just。。。 appear and you are forced to make a leap of imagination (and tolerance) to accept the sudden jump and fill in how that thing happened or what the term is supposed to mean。There is no space given to characterization and character development, we are just forced to believe/accept that someone is a jerk, another is brave and so on。 But why?The whole thing is an epic sci-fi space saga with politics and mumbo jumbo mysticism and philosophy, but there is so much action crammed into it, that there is no room to breathe and no room for "connections", for plot development, for understanding why and how and, most of all, for emotion。 In consequence, reading feels at times like a burden; I did not get attached to any character; I did no feel the plot, the urgency, the menace of the villain or the joy of the resolution。 It's simply a bad narrative, like someone retelling a dream with strange elements that don't make sense and don't need to work together。 。。。more

Jodorowski’s bizarre and wonderful story derived from Jungian psychology (filled to the brim with archetypal folklore) is eventually outshined by the visual genius of Moebius。 Every panel, every texture, every line is so damned perfect。 I’ve never stared so sublimely into printed pages in my life。

An epic story with amazing art, also very influential it would seem to certain movies。

Well。 It turned out to be as good as people say it is。 Moebius artwork is always great and you could see how the story influenced a ton of writers。

Mister Darkness III

A bit crazy but very nice

Dan

An acid trip space opera following an unlikeable detective who gets caught up in events beyond his control and becomes more likeable in the process。 The art is memorable。 The writing is terse and just okay but some of that could be the translation。

Laurens

Hold on。 Gonna read it again。

a mixed bag。 mœbius’ art is absolutely phenomenal throughout but jodorowsky is unfortunately the weak link。 aside from being occasionally rather funny and novel; it’s clearly a repurposing of his ideas for dune。 at times it’s engaging but mostly the world building feels paper thin and the dialogue is a peculiar sort of hyper literal which really destroys the flow of a lot of pages/panels。 the incal is worth a read but at times the plot is a chore to get through。 would still recommend to fans of a mixed bag。 mœbius’ art is absolutely phenomenal throughout but jodorowsky is unfortunately the weak link。 aside from being occasionally rather funny and novel; it’s clearly a repurposing of his ideas for dune。 at times it’s engaging but mostly the world building feels paper thin and the dialogue is a peculiar sort of hyper literal which really destroys the flow of a lot of pages/panels。 the incal is worth a read but at times the plot is a chore to get through。 would still recommend to fans of sci-fi, but outside of the fodder for die- hard genre fanatics, there’s not much to write home about apart from mœbius’s incredible artwork。 。。。more

Really enjoyed this。 The worldbuilding and design is really beautiful and retrofuturistic。 The story is really confusing but the whole thing is similar to star wars; probably takes a few rereads to fully understand the politics。

The story develops at a break neck pace, feeling like Jodorowsky is throwing ideas at the page as fast as he possibly can。 The artwork of Moebius is beautiful, as ever, and well worth the price of admission alone。 Overall this felt like a rapidly evolving fever dream, so don't expect much in the way of character development, but if you accept it on those terms then this is book you can easily fall in love with。 The story develops at a break neck pace, feeling like Jodorowsky is throwing ideas at the page as fast as he possibly can。 The artwork of Moebius is beautiful, as ever, and well worth the price of admission alone。 Overall this felt like a rapidly evolving fever dream, so don't expect much in the way of character development, but if you accept it on those terms then this is book you can easily fall in love with。 。。。more

Art by Moebius is great (as to be expected) and gave me the impression that all the planets and realms in The Incal were real places, but the weakest link in this whole collaboration is Jodorowsky。。。 one of the most overrated men ever。。。 whose process is to throw random ideas at the wall and trust that they'll all dribble together as long as nobody questions it。 All the characters are two dimensional cyphers, all the women are strong, independent, sassy and often naked。 The satire is muddled, in Art by Moebius is great (as to be expected) and gave me the impression that all the planets and realms in The Incal were real places, but the weakest link in this whole collaboration is Jodorowsky。。。 one of the most overrated men ever。。。 whose process is to throw random ideas at the wall and trust that they'll all dribble together as long as nobody questions it。 All the characters are two dimensional cyphers, all the women are strong, independent, sassy and often naked。 The satire is muddled, inconsistent and doesn't really say much except "stop watching the television and start dreaming maaaaan"。 The esoteric spirituality combined with science fiction does admittedly make The Incal's universe pretty unique, though at the same time it ends up creating a universe wherein there are no rules。 The ending is extremely unsatisfying, making it seem like none of it really mattered。 Saying that, it's still pretty good, in spite of all these things。 It holds together well enough and I'll likely read other stuff set in the "jodoverse" or whatever it's called。 。。。more

This has some delightful artwork, with lovely colouring, and of course it flaunts that unique 80s take on future Sci-Fi that has a special place in my heart。 This is one of those graphic novels that remind you what can be done when it is done well。 The choice of perspective and angles on the panels, often lend this a cinematic feel and so at times it’s almost like watching a movie。 With its off-beat other worldiness and strong emphasis on style, and isolation, this to some extent recalls some as This has some delightful artwork, with lovely colouring, and of course it flaunts that unique 80s take on future Sci-Fi that has a special place in my heart。 This is one of those graphic novels that remind you what can be done when it is done well。 The choice of perspective and angles on the panels, often lend this a cinematic feel and so at times it’s almost like watching a movie。 With its off-beat other worldiness and strong emphasis on style, and isolation, this to some extent recalls some aspects of the cinema du look movement which was going on in France at the same time。 But there are more obvious comparisons to be drawn with the likes of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen” and Howard Chaykin’s “American Flagg!” And it’s hard to ignore the echoes of Philip K Dick and William Gibson in here too。 Ultimately “The Incal” is an intriguing blend of camp, soft-porn cosplay with familiar tropes and themes that should satisfy and/or frustrate purists and newbies alike。 。。。more
